SmartStrings Tips From FDF RaceShop
Setting up your race car alignment accurately is crucial for performance on the track. Check out the video below from Josiah and Kyle of FDF RaceShop, to learn about a few tips and tricks for using the Smart Racing Products SmartStrings alignment kit.
Tip #1: Ensure Strings Are Perfectly Parallel

You can fiddle a bit with the bars and framing of the SmartStrings setup. Where you mount the framework on the car is up to you - so long as you make sure that the strings you affix on the bars are exactly parallel.
"The most important thing is that the front and rear bar have the strings positioned at the exact same width."
- Josiah, FDF RaceShop
The strings must remain parallel to the chassis, measured from the center of the hubs to ensure accurate alignment. Now you're ready to adjust basic toe. Also, Josh shared a pro tip for easy wheel movement - a simple garbage bag with some soap/water mixture inside becomes a slick, frictionless surface allowing easy wheel turning.
Making adjustments to a car that is already settled is vital. Aligning a car on stands is somewhat futile - you'll have to redo much of the work after removing the stands because the settled weight on the wheels will impact angles.
Tip #2: Set Tire Pressure and Ride Height First

Always adjust tire pressures and ride height to your intended race settings before alignment. Ride height changes a lot of things, especially bump steer. If you change ride height after alignment, your toe settings will be off.
Tip #3: Adjust Camber Before Toe

Camber adjustments can significantly impact toe alignment, especially in Corvettes. Adjusting camber first ensures minimal disruption.
Tip #4: Use Consistent Measurement Tools

Opt for rulers over tape measures for consistent, precise measurements. If you're working with a buddy, confirm that both your rulers align perfectly to avoid measurement discrepancies.
"Make sure your rulers line up exactly. Even slight discrepancies can cause noticeable alignment issues."
- Josiah, FDF RaceShop
Important Notes

Vehicle Type Matters: Alignment complexity varies greatly depending on your vehicle type. Most Corvettes are straightforward due to their simple suspension geometry, whereas multi-link suspensions require more careful adjustments as toe changes can influence other suspension parameters.
Use a Buddy: SmartStrings systems allow one person to align the car. However, if you've got a buddy handy, use them. You can work on either side of the car in tandem, and adjustments will be faster and easier.
